Straight Thoughts on Mayor Pete
Alright friends here is some "straight talk" (as we call it in the Caribbean).
I know that my unabashed support of my homosexual friends and community (such as #mayorpete) makes you uncomfortable and like you need to pray for me. I love that you love me and that you are concerned for me. We in the #evangelical community lived a lot of hard and joyful years together and I will never ever forget the amazing bond we had. But, to be honest, I got tired of judging people and of lining up everyone else's actions to white straight males perception of scripture. Scripture is deeper and wider and more mysterious than any of us can explain. Then look at the Universe as a whole (the very original scripture for those that believe in a creating God) and we will see that it is extremely complicated, deeply weird, and wider than any of us can imagine.
The evidence of homosexuality, bi-sexualism, and transgenderism in nature is outstanding and overwhelmingly present. Fish, birds, worms, plants, bacteria, fungi, apes, dolphins and thousands of other species have members of their populations who are not straight. Additionally, there are whole populations that gender switch, have sexual play with those in the same gender and then others that are hermaphroditic. So why do our non-straight human friends bother us so passionately? How did they become our adversaries and us not their allies? I know many of you will state, “Because Creation fell when we fell and we are not honoring GOD when we excuse sin.” (This is a classic evangelical line that many leaders including @franklingraham likes to routinely use).
I used to fall for that line, and actually repeat it to students, mentees, and “my disciples” Montreat College. But here is the straight truth. We excuse sin everyday. We excuse ourselves when we cheat on our taxes, when we walk by the homeless drunk and do not ask him home for dinner, when male church elders watch porn and yet talk to our teenage girls about purity and virginity, when we leave children and families at the border and say “There is no inn for you to lay in”, when we judge the young woman wearing skinny jeans at church and yet wear yoga pants to drop off our kids in the Christian school car line, and when we leave 10,000 foster kids in the system in North Carolina alone because we can’t handle their pain and we want a baby! While, this is a short list of our many sin excuses (I have heard literally thousands over the years) the laundry list of ways we do NOT have to follow the pattern and truth that Jesus set up on Earth is outstanding.
So, here’s the straight truth. I am done judging people alongside of you, it is part of why I left evangelicalism, and it is part in why I would support Mayor Pete for President. Mayor Pete is gay. He like many other beings on Earth is not straight. He has created a lovely life for himself in public service to his community and to the faith community. I am proud of him. He is a fighter, he is real, and you know what, he is loving people well. I would much rather have him for President than a man who gropes women; lies on average over 15 times a day to the American public; thinks he is above the law; has no concern for the poor, or women, or black people, or Hispanics, or anyone else besides himself; and who uses the religious right to fuel his love of money and power.
That you, my dear friends that I walked alongside for so many years, are okay with our current President, Franklin Graham’s unwavering support of him, or the religious rights continued monetary support of an unlawful and “ungodly” administration is the real concern to me.
So once again, I will say it with full boldness as I did on Wednesday April 24th, 2019:
Franklin Graham please repent for your love of money, your triple digit (over $600,000 salary), your multiple cars, and your unwavering support of a lying adulterer as President of the US. It is a disgrace to the people of Western NC, the many impoverished children that Samaritans Purse supports throughout the globe, and the very Church that Jesus came to set up. Two can play at this game, and I will tell you that calling out others sins leads absolutely nowhere. Just posting this makes me feel sick, and yet, I felt I needed to make a point.
